Brandness specialises in working with SMEs (Small to Medium Enterprises) to help them be the best businesses they can be.
Increasingly, businesses are defined by their brand and indeed, for most businesses, their brand is their most valuable asset (although most don’t realise it).
Using proven Business Design methodologies, we ensure clients are optimising, aligning, and implementing their business and brand strategies, based on deep customer understanding.

Brandness tailors work to the needs of each client. We work with you either through a module-based or bespoke approach.
Our module approach
We have three core modules, all based on proven methodologies with proven results for SME clients. We like to call them ‘The Business Design Triumvirate’ - the definition of triumvirate being a group of three powerful things... and you don’t get much more powerful than these three in business:
High level business strategy – using the successful uPAT Framework, answering the big questions of businesses such as: ‘who are we’, ‘why are we here’, ‘where are we headed’, and ‘what does the journey look like’?
Brand – brands exist to connect and engage with customers, so where does your brand sit in this regard? Through the Brand Impressions approach, your brand is investigated resulting in a brand strategy to help you achieve your aspirations. This, of course, is tightly connected to your business strategy.
Customer – without them we don‘t have a business, so understanding them is crucial. We use a persona development methodology to facilitate deep understanding of key customer types and how to best interact with them. This also underpins the above work.

Facilitation - As they say, ‘teamwork is dreamwork’, but sometimes getting the best out of a team can be tricky, particularly in meetings. Having an external, independent facilitator can make all the difference. They are there, with no agenda, no preconceived ideas or positions, but purely to work with the group to get the best out of them – to challenge, cajole, explore, and hopefully help the team perform at its best to get the best outcomes. The skill of a good facilitator is not having expertise in whatever subject is being discussed, but expertise in being able to work with people to get the best out of them as individuals and the best out of the group as a whole to optimise outcomes.
Senior Management ‘Sounding Board’ - Without stating the bleeding obvious, it’s a tough job running a business, and it can be lonely at the top. So having someone outside the business you trust, that you can chew the fat with, toss ideas around with, grumble to, and generally have as a sounding board while also potentially helping keep you accountable can be very beneficial.
Our APPROACH
Brandness is not a traditional consultancy or agency – we are not here to tell you what to do. Rather we are enablers, facilitating you and your team to enable you to develop the most relevant work in the areas above, then working closely with you to facilitate the implementation of that work.
As such, all our module work revolves around team based, facilitated workshops. It is highly recommended that the work is delivered by short, sharp 90 minute online workshops, spaced to suit your situation (minimum two per week). These are huge topics and even at 90 minutes, the work can be quite draining. However, face-to-face workshops are possible (usually 2 x 6 hours) or a hybrid model can be discussed. Our bespoke work is done, well, bespoke, designed to meet your engagement needs.
The Brandness journey begins with a free 90 minute Zoom introductory / exploratory session so we can understand your business a bit more and you can fully understand what is on offer from Brandness. Many businesses find this session alone very beneficial and given it is no charge, what have you got to lose? If we both agree Brandness would be of benefit we scope the work to be done, then schedule it as appropriate - the modules are a series of eight workshops, then there is 12 months of implementation support / mentoring (up to six further workshops).

David is a highly experienced business professional passionate about helping Australian SMEs grow and optimise their success through a design centred approach to business strategy, user / customer centricity, brand, and innovation.
In a career spanning more than 40 years, David has worked with hundreds of businesses, from large corporates such as HP, Telstra, and NEC to his now preferred area of SMEs, successfully completing a large variety of projects to help build their businesses.
He has spoken widely in Australia and overseas, published papers and contributed to books, and lectured at Masters level in brand strategy.
